Alice Munro and Canadian Short Stories : Alice Munro won the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature. The Nobel judges proclaimed her a “master of contemporary short story.” Here we celebrate her work and that of other Canadian short story writers.

All Things Cape Breton: To those who hail from this island in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island is indeed “the home of our hearts”. Discover the wonder that is our island though personal stories, history, ficton, and more!

Alternate Times and Universes : A person from a “normal” reality (to them) is removed to or confronted with an alternate reality or period of time, or is meddling with a timeline. From Lest Darkness Fall by L Sprague de Camp to modern novels such as Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

Arts and Crafts : Some newly added arts & crafts books including knitting, sewing, weaving, painting and woodworking.

Asperger’s, Autism and the Spectrum : Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders as seen by medical professionals, parents, families, and those diagnosed as being on the Spectrum, as well as fiction touching on the Spectrum. An eclectic mix from many differing viewpoints and for various age levels, selected from the collection of the Cape Breton Regional Library.

Atlantic Book Awards : Award-winning books and contenders held in the collection of the Cape Breton Regional Library.

Audiobooks – Staff Audio Reviews : Some of the best of what library staff have been listening to.

Black Canadians : Books dealing with Black Canadians, particularly those pertaining to Nova Scotia. A mix of fiction and non-fiction, for both children and adults.

Book Awards: Each year there are many book awards given out for outstanding works of both fiction and non-fiction, both at home and abroad. Here are some of the contenders for various awards (the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Man Booker Prize, etc.) held by the Cape Breton Regional Library. Note: the Atlantic Book Awards for books from and about the Atlantic Provinces are featured on a separate Atlantic Book Awards board.

Book of the Day : Every few days we offer a different book. It may be new, or old. Relevant or completely irrelevant. Just a book that caught our eye.

“Book Me!”: Writers featured on the “Book Me!” podcasts of Costas Halavresos (former CBC Radio host of “Maritime Noon”). Chosen for Atlantic Canadian book lovers, the authors have been published by Halifax-based Nimbus Books and Vagrant Press, the largest Canadian English-language publisher east of Toronto. Bookflix: Movies : You liked the movie, now try the book! We have both the book and the movie: click through to the catalog to place a hold.

Bookflix: TV : You’ve seen the TV show or miniseries, but have you read the book it’s based on? The following books all have adaptations that are currently airing or can be found in our DVD collection.

Bullies and Bullying : From picture books through teen fiction, personal stories to anti-bullying techniques for both kids and concerned adults, a selection of works showing bullying in its many forms from the varying perspectives of the victims, the perpetrators, the bystanders, and the oblivious, and those who want to help.

Canada : What is this country called Canada? Who are Canadians? There are many answers to those questions. Perhaps these books by and for Canadians will help discover them.

Canada Reads : Canada Reads is an annual “battle of the books” competition organized and broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Five Canadian personalities each select a book they want Canadians to read and defend their chosen title in a series of debates aired on TV and radio. At the end of each debate, the panelists vote one title out of the competition, and books are eliminated one by one until a winner is declared. Here are the finalists and winners from past Canada Reads competitions.

Canada’s Military – In War and In Peace : Personal stories, histories,narratives, and more, selected from the collection of the Cape Breton Regional Library

Classic Science Fiction : These award winners, cult classics, and revitalizations and more transport you to far-off lands to tour alien civilizations and futuristic technology, some of which we have today!

Cookbooks : Newly added cookbooks in the library. The most recent books will appear first.

Decorating and Organizing : Ideas to inspire that new look.

Downton Abbey Fans : If you can’t get enough of Downton Abbey you may want to check out these books and DVDs which feature similar stories! Like the show many of these novels and movies are set in Edwardian England and focus on the lives of aristocratic families.

Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction : These novels depict either an individual fighting against oppression or a group of people coping collectively as a society with the dehumanized conditions. For teens and adults.

Earth: Books to Celebrate and help protect our planet.

Erotic Fiction : Wondering what to read after Fifty Shades of Grey? Looking for something edgier than a typical romance novel? We have the following in print, plus an ebook collection at digitalmedia.library.ns.ca. Please note that these are mature titles containing explicit sex, which some readers may find offensive.

Fantasy : For those who love Game of Thrones, or those who just want to try a foray into other realities far outside the ordinary.

Fiction Reads for Older Teens : Great books for mature young adults to enjoy!

First Nations, Metis and Inuit : Books dealing with North American Indigenous Peoples (predominately Canadian), particularly those pertaining to the Mi’kmaq. A mix of fiction and non-fiction, children’s and adult works.

Fitness, Inspiration, and Motivation! : Looking for that jump start towards a healthy lifestyle? Let these helpful, educational titles lead you in the right direction!

Gardening and Homesteading Books : Get ready for spring & summer with some great books for green thumbs, urban farmers, and traditional homesteaders!

Girl on a Train Read-Alikes : If you liked “The Girl on the Train,” check out the suspenseful books listed below. These mysteries feature troubled characters with unreliable memories and multiple twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages quickly.

Graphic Novels for Grown-ups: Think comic books are for kids? That they’re all about masked villains fighting caped heroes? Think again! There are as many different genres of graphic novels as there are of regular books.

The Halifax Explosion: On December 6, 1917, two ships collided in Halifax harbour, resulting in the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of the atomic bomb. The story and scope of the disaster and its aftermath is revealed in fiction and non-fiction narratives for both adults and children in these selections from the collection of the Cape Breton Regional Library.

 Historic Truths, Imagined Lives : Based on historic events and real people, these books re-imagine history by telling a story from the point-of-view of a secondary (sometimes fictional) character.

Lego for Everyone: If you love LEGO, we have a book for you! Find projects for all ages and skill levels, as well as looks at various characters and creations.

Living Mannequins : The first Living Mannequins Reading Event took place at the Baddeck Library on Sunday, April 7th 2013. It was so successful it has now become a recurring event! Here are some of the books purchased with the funds raised.

Manga Series : Whether you’re a grown-up or a kid, whether you like action, romance, mystery, magic, horror, or a little bit of everything, you should be able to find something new to try among these Japanese (and Japanese-style) graphic novel series.
