The Cape Breton Regional Library invites applications from Internal and External candidates for the position of Food Literacy Coordinator.  

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Coordinator of Community Support, the Food Literacy Coordinator will design and deliver programs and outreach initiatives aimed at improving access to food and enhancing food literacy skills. The successful candidate will be expected to think creatively, developing innovative approaches to food programming that accommodate the limited kitchen facilities available in many of our library spaces.

Requirements:

  • This position requires a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license with an excellent driving record and regular access to a vehicle. Mileage will be reimbursed for off-site travel.
  • Lifting and moving of medium to heavy objects.

Responsibilities

  • Research, plan, promote, and deliver food literacy programs for adults and children, focusing on building food skills and knowledge.
  • Facilitate diverse learning experiences that improve community members’ access to and ability to prepare healthy, affordable food.
  • Build relationships and maintain community partnerships
  • Develop and update a calendar of food security resources and agencies within CBRM and Victoria County
  • Display, promote and perform work duties in a positive and safe way.
  • Design and prepare a variety of visual media (e.g., displays, signage, etc.) and promote library events, services, initiatives, resources and collections related to food literacy
  • Facilitate and plan initiatives that meet immediate hunger needs of library patrons
  • Prepare a final report evaluating participation and community impact, including guidelines for future food literacy programming at the Library
  • Promote library services in the local community and respond to local community needs
  • Other public library service duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Experience providing social services and/or previous work in community outreach
  • Experience working with diverse communities as well as individuals on a one-on-one basis or in group settings
  • Experience in food literacy, nutrition, cooking, agriculture, or a similar field
  • Excellent presentation skills and proven ability to plan and deliver programs
  • Excellent skills in customer service, organization and communication
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to interpret needs and offer solutions
  • Ability to assess community interests and needs and to plan and evaluate services accordingly
  • Ability to work positively, effectively, and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexibility, creativity, initiative, accountability, and demonstrated commitment to continuous growth and development
  • Intermediate computer knowledge and skills, including Microsoft Office applications and Canva
  • Diploma in a field related to social services, community development or food science or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Terms of Employment

 Hours: 35 hours per week, including evenings and weekends

12-month term          

 Hourly rate: $25.00

 Location: Library Headquarters and other CBRL locations
