
The Cape Breton Regional Library invites internal and external applications for the position of library clerk (part-time) at the Martha Hollett Memorial Library, Sydney Mines.
About the Library:
Cape Breton Regional Library’s 11 branches serve the community by offering innovative programs, technology access, and various lending services (e.g., books, DVDS, recreational equipment, radon detectors, eBooks, and more). Library branches are community spaces for many residents and stopping places for visitors. We serve a diverse population of all ages and recognize the unique needs of all individuals.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to provide excellent customer service and plan or assist with various programs, events and other library activities. We welcome applicants who can support the library’s mandate to provide lifelong learning opportunities for all ages. Applicants should outline any relevant experience or abilities related to leading group activities, technology instruction, artistic or creative abilities.
Job Duties:
- Customer service and circulation duties, including checking out library materials, registering patrons for library cards, answering questions, assisting patrons with searching for and locating library materials, answering incoming phone calls, and notifying patrons of items ready for pick-up.
- Assisting with program delivery, room set up, and program preparations.
- Shelving duties, including sorting and returning library materials to their proper place on the shelves, straightening and shifting library materials.
- Scheduling bookings for public access computers and providing technical assistance with frequent tasks such as printing and scanning.
- Promoting materials, programs, events, and services provided by the library.
- Opening and closing of the library branch
- Accepting payments for printing and lost items
Hours of work:
A schedule of 28.5 hours per week will include days, evenings, and Saturdays.
Monday 12:30 – 5 p m. Tuesday 1 -5 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. Wednesday 10–2 p.m.
Thursday 9 – 12 p.m & 1-5 p.m. Saturday 9 – 12 p.m. & 1 – 5 p.m.
Work Environment:
Working conditions include a combination of lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and carrying books and other library materials.
Applicants must have:
- Minimum requirement: a high school diploma or equivalent. Additional education or experience is considered an asset.
- Experience working in a customer service environment and an inclusive and empathetic approach to serving the public.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
- Confidence with technology, including a good working knowledge of Windows-based word processing, spreadsheet applications, and web-based email applications (e.g. Gmail). Additional technology skills are considered an asset.
- Willingness to develop new skills and participate in professional development opportunities
- Experience with delivering programs or workshops to various age groups.

- A criminal record check and vulnerable sector screening will be required.
