CBRL has a collection of light therapy lamps available to borrow.

Lamps can be placed on hold and delivered to the library location of your choice for you to take home. You may borrow the lamp for three weeks.

What is a Light Therapy Lamp?

According to MayoClinic,

“Light therapy is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and certain other conditions by exposure to artificial light. SAD is a type of depression that occurs at a certain time each year, usually in the fall or winter.

During light therapy, you sit or work near a device called a light therapy box (or lamp). The box gives off bright light that mimics natural outdoor light.

Light therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood and sleep, easing SAD symptoms. Using a light therapy box may also help with other types of depression, sleep disorders and other conditions.”

How to use the lamp

DO…

• Turn on the lamp and allow a few minutes for bulb to achieve full brightness.
• Sit about 6-24″ away from the lamp, with the lamp positioned slightly off centre.
• Keep your eyes open, but DO NOT look directly at the light. Avoid wearing sunglasses, tinted glasses, or a hat with a visor as they block the good light. Clear glasses are fine.
• Use it any time of day. Morning and mid-afternoon are ideal times, but NOT within 4 hours before bedtime, which can affect your ability to get a good sleep.

About the Backstrap Loom Kit

Recommended age: 9+ years old

Learn the centuries-old art of backstrap loom weaving to make colourful belts, straps, wristbands, or bookmarks!

How to use the Backstrap Loom:

Getting Started

1. Attach the warp to the wooden clamp by loosening the black knobs, separating the clamp, and placing the short knotted end of the warp between the pieces of wood. Tighten the black knobs to secure the clamp and warp.
2. Using the white cotton string, feed one end through the free end of the warp, in front of the knot, and then fasten the white string to a heavy, stationary object like a table leg.
3. Wrap the weaving yarn around the shuttle/beater.
4. Take the cord attached to the clamp, unhook the side attached with a small screw, bring it around your back and re-hook the cord to the clamp. The clamp should be about 6 to 8 inches away from the front of your body.
5. Ensure correct tension in the warp by slightly leaning back, whether sitting or standing, until the warp is pulled tightly.

How to Weave

*Refer to the included Instruction Booklet or video for step-by-step photos*

1. Make a space (referred to as a “shed”) with the warp yarn by pulling straight up on the rigid heddle. You should have a triangular-shaped space in the warp yarn.
2. Pull the shuttle/beater through the shed, leaving a 1 inch “tail” on the side on which you started.
3. Tap the weft yarn into place by using either the shuttle/beater, or the rigid heddle. The shuttle makes a narrower, firmer end result, while the heddle is more wide and loose.
4. Push the rigid heddle down to make another shed. You should notice that the yarn strands have switched positions.
5. Tuck the yarn tail into the weaving, then bring the shuttle/beater through to the other side.
6. Tap the weft yarn into place as in Step 3.
7. Continue these steps until you’ve reached your desired length.

Ready to Borrow?

Memory Kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. Place a hold on a kit to have it delivered to your local library for pick-up. Kits must be returned directly to staff at a CBRL location.

What is a Memory Kit?

Memory kits are tools designed to stimulate recollections to facilitate positive interactions and meaningful engagement, particularly for people with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or other forms of memory loss.

Each kit contains a number of objects focused on a specific theme designed to stimulate meaningful engagement and interaction. Resources like photographs, puzzles, music, and household objects can help elicit memories and foster connections between those with memory loss and their caregivers and/or loved ones.

Why are Memory Kits useful?

Memory is more than just a collection of past experiences—it is the essence of who we are. Memory shapes our thoughts, decisions, feelings, and beliefs, creating the foundation of an individual’s identity. Memory loss can be confusing
and frustrating for the individuals experiencing it first-hand. It can also pose a challenge for caregivers and family members.

Reminiscence Therapy (RT) involves the discussion of memories and past experiences with other people using tangible prompts to evoke recollections and stimulate conversation. Reminiscence Therapy incorporates the senses to help
individuals remember events, people, and places from their lives. RT is based on the idea that looking back at our lives and recalling, discussing, and interacting with someone in the present is therapeutic. For many people with dementia,
memories from the past – such as their childhood or young adulthood – are often easier to recall than more recent events.

Research demonstrates sharing memories reconnects people living with memory loss to their own identity and to their loved ones. However, their loved ones may not know what to talk about or what activities they can do together. CBRL’s
memory kits provide the tools for people to connect and engage with their loved ones and allow them to access useful materials in a convenient and effective way.

What is inside a Memory Kit?

Cape Breton Regional Library’s memory kits are available in thirteen different themes. The kits include a variety of items that are intended to help evoke memories, spark conversations, and create opportunities for sensory exploration and meaningful engagement. Memory kits contain an assortment of items that can be adapted as abilities change.

Person-centered: Memory Kits feature different themes, items, and resources to take into account individual preferences, interests, and abilities.

Cognitively stimulating: Kits provide cognitive stimulation to encourage the mental processes involved in understanding, processing, and using information, including attention, perception, memory, and language.

Socially interactive: Memory kits encourage communication, collaboration, and social engagement.

Adaptable: As memory loss progresses, the abilities and needs of the individual may change. The kits are adaptable to accommodate these changes and ensure continued engagement.

Multi-sensory: Engaging multiple senses can help stimulate the brain and create a more immersive experience. Memory kits involve multiple sensory modalities.

Enjoyable: Memory kits facilitate an experience that is enjoyable and fun, promoting positive emotions and overall well-being.

Variety: Kits incorporate a variety of different themes, objects and items, to provide a diverse and comprehensive experience.

Introducing new mini fidget kits from the library! Now you can fidget on the go, wherever you go, thanks to our portable fidget kits that provide a variety of sensory and tactile experiences in a convenient zippered pouch.

Fidgeting with toys can help us sharpen our focus, reduce stress and anxiety, increase muscle development and enhance fine motor skills. Fidget toys can be especially helpful for people who have sensory processing differences, autism, or developmental disabilities.

Pop a sensory fidget kit in your bag or car and take it along any time you or your family could benefit from increased concentration, relaxation, stimulation, or just plain fun!

Each kit includes a variety of 10 assorted sensory items in a clear zippered bag.

Stepping stones provide the following benefits:

• Promote active play and physical activity
• Develop agility, balance, and coordination
• Improve gross motor skills
• Inspire imagination and creativity through open ended, flexible play
• Provide opportunities for challenges and confidence-building.

The set includes 12 stones of varying sizes. The lightweight, space-saving design allows the pieces to stack on top of each other and store in the provided bag when not in use.

Stepping stones are made of a durable, slip-resistant polypropylene material and have a thick and sturdy rubber bottom. The maximum weight limit is 220 pounds, so the stepping stones can be used by people across a range of ages and sizes.

Funding for the Stepping Stones kits was provided by Nova Scotia Health Community Health Boards Eastern Zone members: East Cape Breton County Community Health Board, Northside the Lakes Community Health Board, and Central Cape Breton County Community Health Board.

Any audio format book in the CELA or NNELs libraries can be loaded onto this player. Registered CELA or NNELS patrons can choose to browse the CELA and NNELS websites themselves or ask library staff to help them find books. Staff will also load the books onto the player.
