Getting Started

  1. Attach the warp to the wooden clamp by loosening the black knobs, separating the clamp, and placing the short knotted end of the warp between the pieces of wood. Tighten the black knobs to secure the clamp and warp.
  2. Using the white cotton string, feed one end through the free end of the warp, in front of the knot, and then fasten the white string to a heavy, stationary object like a table leg.
  3. Wrap the weaving yarn around the shuttle/beater.
  4. Take the cord attached to the clamp, unhook the side attached with a small screw, bring it around your back and re-hook the cord to the clamp. The clamp should be about 6 to 8 inches away from the front of your body.
  5. Ensure correct tension in the warp by slightly leaning back, whether sitting or standing, until the warp is pulled tightly.

How to Weave

*Refer to the included Instruction Booklet or video for step-by-step photos*

  1. Make a space (referred to as a “shed”) with the warp yarn by pulling straight up on the rigid heddle. You should have a triangular-shaped space in the warp yarn.
  2. Pull the shuttle/beater through the shed, leaving a 1 inch “tail” on the side on which you started.
  3. Tap the weft yarn into place by using either the shuttle/beater, or the rigid heddle. The shuttle makes a narrower, firmer end result, while the heddle is more wide and loose.
  4. Push the rigid heddle down to make another shed. You should notice that the yarn strands have switched positions.
  5. Tuck the yarn tail into the weaving, then bring the shuttle/beater through to the other side.
  6. Tap the weft yarn into place as in Step 3.
  7. Continue these steps until you’ve reached your desired length.

  2. LED bulbs (x7, assorted colours) 
  3. Insulating dough 
  4. Conductive dough (x4, assorted colours)

Caution!

  • Choking hazard: contains small parts. Adult supervision required.
  • LED terminals contain sharp edges. 
  • Only use AA alkaline batteries. Turn off when not in use. Do not allow battery terminals to touch during use. 
  • Wipe off LED and battery terminals after use to reduce corrosion.

Getting Started

  1. Insert 4 AA batteries into the battery holder and switch it ON.
  2. Taking two pieces of conductive dough, insert one battery terminal into each. Make sure that the two pieces of conductive dough are not touching. 
  3. Move apart the terminals of an LED bulb. Place the longer LED terminal into the dough with the red battery terminal wire, and the shorter LED terminal into the dough with the black battery terminal wire. 4. 
  4. Watch as the LED lights up!
  5. When you are done creating remove battery terminals, turn off battery pack and wipe the dough off the battery terminals. LED bulbs should also be removed and wiped clean.
  6. Visit the Squishy Circuits YouTube Channel or their website for fun project ideas

Quick Fixes

If your LED bulb is not lighting up, try the following fixes: 

  1. Make sure that your conductive dough pieces are not touching. To help prevent this, place a piece of insulating dough between the conducting dough. 
  2. Check that the LED terminals are paired with the correct battery terminals. The longer LED terminal pairs with the red battery terminal, and the shorter LED terminal pairs with the black battery terminal.

What is Spool Knitting?

Also known as French Knitting or corking, spool knitting is used to create cords.  A spool is fitted with nails or pegs and as yarn is wrapped around pegs the cord emerges through the middle of the spool. This type of knitting has been practised for over 400 years.

Getting Started

Watch the video below or keep reading for written instructions. The Friendly Loom instruction book included in the kit also has helpful photo references and design ideas.

How to Cast On

  1. With the staples facing upwards, insert one end of the yarn through the hole in the centre of the spool allowing about 4 inches of yarn to hang out the other end. Tip: Use the needle included to help. Thread the yarn through the needle, then feed the needle through the spool.
  2. Hold the spool and the 4 inch end of yarn in one hand while you begin to wrap the long end of yarn around each staple in a counter-clockwise direction.
  3. Rotate the spool in a counterclockwise direction and wrap the yarn around the next staple, as in Step 2. Don’t wrap too tightly! Continue until all 4 staples have been wrapped in yarn once.

How to Spool Knit

  1. Once all four staples have been wrapped once and you are back to the first staple, wrap it one more time.
  2. Take the knitting needle and lift the bottom loop of yarn over the top, lifting it off of the staple. There should only be one stitch/loop left on the staple (the top one that you just added). 
  3. Now you continue by holding the yarn in front of each staple and lifting the bottom loop of yarn over.  Keep going in the same (counterclockwise) direction.  
  4. Gently pull down on the 4 inch end every few stitches. Eventually, you will see the cord coming out of the bottom of the spool.
  5. Continue until your cord is your desired length.
  6. To add new yarn simply tie your new piece of yarn to your working yarn.
  7. When you’ve reached your desired length, you will need to cast off following directions below.

How to Cast Off

  1. Thread your working yarn through the needle. Then, insert the needle & attached yarn through the loop of yarn on the next staple, lifting it off of the staple.
  2. Repeat Step 1 until all four staples are empty. Tie off the yarn and pull it through the spool.

Getting Started

Watch the video below to see how to set up and start weaving.  You can also keep reading for written instructions.  The Friendly Loom Instructional booklet included with the kit also has helpful instructions with diagrams.

Terminology

Weaving using two sets of thread or yarn to make cloth. 

In weaving, warp refers to the vertical threads that are held stationary on the frame or loom. Weft refers to the threads that are woven in and out of the warp, running horizontally across the loom.

With the Peg Loom you will make a warp by wrapping white cotton thread around the pegs on the loom.

The weft will be the coloured yarns you weave over and under the warp threads.

Setting up the Warp

  1. Using the white cotton warp string, tie one end to any corner peg (top or bottom).
  2. Begin looping the string around each peg, alternating between the top and bottom row of pegs. Keep the string tight!
  3.  When you reach the last peg (which should be the opposite side of where you started), tie it off and cut the string, leaving two or three inches.

How to Weave

  1.  Thread a piece of yarn through the needle. DO NOT tie the yarn.
  2.  Starting on the right side of the loom, begin weaving the needle through the warp string by going over the first string, under the second, over the third, under the fourth, and so on, until you reach the other end of your loom. Make sure to leave a two to three inch tail hanging at the side you started.
  3.  Tuck in the tail by weaving it through the warp string, similar to the steps in Step 2.
  4.  Using your fingers (or a fork!), tap the yarn down towards the bottom of the loom. Repeat this step after every row. Each row should sit tightly against one another.
  5.  When you reach the last row at the top pegs, weave in the last tail.
  6. Gently lift your project off the loom.

Ideas for Small Projects

  • Instead of adding warp thread to the whole frame, use only 3 or 4 centre pegs of the loom.  This will make a great bookmark or chunky bracelet.

What to do if you don’t finish weaving the whole warp.

It is preferable to fill the whole frame so if you intend to make a smaller project from the start, i.e. a bookmark, only add the warp thread to a few centre pegs, as shown above.

If you intended to fill the whole frame but didn’t have time or decided you wanted a smaller project here is what you can do:

  •  Weave to your desired size. Gently lift warp thread off one peg at a time and pull through to the next peg. 

  • Keep a bit of a tail with the warp string.
  • Work slowly and patiently until you get back to the beginning of the project.
  •  Use a needle to weave in the tails of the warp.

About Learn to Crochet: Kit # 2 Ribbed Hat and Pom Poms

Recommended age: 8 and up.

In this beginner friendly kit you will learn the half double crochet stitch and use it to make a hat. You will finish the hat by making a pom pom. Printed instructions and video links are provided.

Project 1 Ribbed Hat

Ribbed Hat Instructions:

Supplies needed:
  • 1 Skein – Any worsted weight or bulky yarn  (150 metres or more) 
  • 1 Crochet Hook – 5 mm (6 mm if using a bulky yarn)
  • Darning Needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape 
Abbreviations:
  • Ch = Chain
  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet 
  • St = Stitch 
  • Ss = Slip Stitch 
Instructions:
  • Chain 12”-14” or 30-36 cm (or longer for a slouchy hat) 
  • Row 1 – Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, Hdc in each ch across. – Ch 1 and turn
  • Row 2 – Working in back loops only, Hdc in first st, and in each st all the way across. Ch 1, turn. (Be very careful not to miss the last stitch, and that you have the same amount in every row). 
  • Repeat Row 2 until you have reached approximately 17”-20” or 44-50 cm (Or until it fits around your head). 
  • Stop at an EVEN amount of rows. 
  • Fold in half to join the final row to the first row. Stitch these rows together with a slip stitch.
  • Leave about 20” or 50 cm of yarn tail.
  • Cut yarn and pull through. 
  • With Darning Needle, weave in and out to gather top of hat.
  • Pull snug and tie to the beginning yarn. 
  • Leave this tail of yarn to tie Pom Pom to.

Finishing

Tie your finished Pom Pom to the top of your hat and weave in any loose ends with the darning needle.

2. Project 2: EASY BEGINNER’S Crochet Dish Cloth

Written Instructions for Dishcloth

Begin with a slip knot.

Use chain stitch and make a chain of 25.

Make a single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook. 

Continue to single crochet until you reach the last stitch in the chain.  Do a single crochet in the last stitch and then chain 1 stitch.  

Turn your work and begin to single crochet across the next row.

Continue working rows of single crochet until you have enough rows to make a square. (Should be 24 rows)  (Use a ruler to measure the length and width of your project.)

Add an edge to your project by working a row of single crochet evenly around the entire edge of the dishcloth. Chain 2 stitches at each corner before beginning the next edge. When you have done all four sides and are back at your first stitch, form a loop by chaining 8 stitches and then use a slip stitch to secure the loop to the next stitch in the corner.

Cut the yarn and pull it through to fasten off.  

Use a darning needle to weave in loose ends.

Getting Started

  1. First, check out the parts of your kit and make sure all tools are
    included:
    • Safe-saw: This cutting tool can be used to cut materials into the desired size and shape that you need. Use the pointed end to puncture holes for your re-clips.
    • Re-clip: Use this tool to fasten pieces together. Use the pin to puncture through the material, and attach the clip to the underside
      of the pin to fasten it to the material.
    • Lock-hinge: Create movement by using the lock-hinge. Attach the lock-hinge to your desired material using the re-clips. To lock the lock-hinge, push the right-side of the hinge down so that there is
      no space in the middle bar. To unlock, push the right-side of the
      lock-hinge up.
  2. Use these tools to bring your creations to life!
  3. When you’re done, simply detach the pieces and reuse them on another creation

Makey Makey electronic circuit board kit

Recommended age: 8+ years old

Requires: computer or laptop (not included)

Makey Makey is an invention tool that allows you to connect your computer to everyday objects and use them in place of your keyboard and mouse! No software to install. Works with Mac, PC, and Chromebooks.

Makey Makey can be requested through the SamePage Catalogue.

Once available it can be borrowed for 3 weeks.

Kit Contents

Items in your kit are numbered as follows:

  1. Instruction booklet
  2. Circuit board
  3. Red USB cable
  4. Alligator clips (x7)
  5. Jumper wires (x6)

Caution!

  • Keep circuit board and computer away from water.
  • Do not connect Makey Makey to a wall outlet or charger.
  • Only connect to a computer.

Getting Started

  • First, make sure all parts are included in your kit. Let your library branch know if anything is missing.
  • Open a text editor or word processor (such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs) on your computer.
  • Next, connect the circuit board to your computer using the red USB cable.
  • Using an alligator clip, connect one end to “earth” on the circuit board, and hold the other end with your hand.
  • Touch the “space” button on the circuit board with your other hand. A green light will turn on to indicate you’ve made a connection. Your computer should respond by making a space as if you touched the space bar on your keyboard.
  • Now, using another alligator clip, connect one end to the “space” button on the circuit board and the other end to an object. NOTE: some objects will work better than others. Things like fruit and metallic objects work great.
  • Now that you’ve made a connection with the circuit board, check out the Makey Makey apps linked below, the user manual, or begin experimenting and create your own invention!
