Technical Services Clerk – Full-time

Position Summary:  

Cape Breton Regional Library invites applications for the full-time position of Technical Services Clerk at Cape Breton Regional Library Headquarters in Sydney.

Cape Breton Regional Library (CBRL) is a public library system in Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Victoria County with 12 branches and a bookmobile. CBRL is part of Same Page, a partnership of eight regional libraries across Nova Scotia. Same Page provides residents of Nova Scotia with access to almost 1,000,000 materials held at over 60 public library locations across the province.

Supervisory Relationship:


Reports to the Technical Services Librarian. Works as part of the technical services team as well as independently under general supervision and the guidance of library policies and procedures. Consults with other departmental heads as appropriate.

Essential Job Responsibilities/Duties:

Under the direction of the Technical Services Librarian, the clerk will perform a variety of clerical and client service functions including, but not limited to:

  • Processing library material requests to send from CBRL headquarters to other library locations using the Integrated Library System (ILS) computer software. Tasks include:
    • Receiving and processing incoming materials and returns.
    • Retrieving outgoing items from carts and shelves.
    • Preparing items for distribution to other libraries.
    • Delivering outgoing packages to the library headquarters’ garage daily.
    • Handling all library materials appropriately and with care.
  • Cataloguing library audiovisual materials by entering brief bibliographic item records for items in the library’s database using the ILS software and updating existing bibliographic item records as required.
  • Preparing audiovisual materials for circulation by affixing labels, barcodes, and identifying tags to items.
  • Cleaning and repairing audiovisual materials, including DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, and CD audiobooks.
  • Processing orders for the library’s online book sale by responding to customer inquiries, processing transactions, and packaging orders for shipment.
  • Assisting with collection development tasks for audiovisual items, including conducting routine inventory of materials.
  • Processing online library card applications.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Hours of work:

Up to 35 hours per week between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Schedule changes may be required according to library needs.

Required Skills:

  • High school diploma and secondary diploma completed.
  • Technology skills with a proficiency in a Windows-based environment.
  • The ability to communicate professionally in person, over the phone, and through email.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to follow precise procedures.
  • Flexibility in changing from one task to another.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.
  • General knowledge of the library’s collection and services.
  • Previous library experience an asset.

Physical demands and work environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands to manipulate and move objects, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, and lift/move up to 35 pounds. Must be able to have repetitive wrist hand and/or finger movement to type and work on computer. Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment. The individual will regularly be required to sit, type, and focus on a computer monitor for prolonged periods.
