
CBRL Summer Student Assistant Position – Glace Bay
Location:
Glace Bay Library 143 Commercial St Glace Bay, NS B1A 3B9
Hours of Work:
35 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday. Includes daytime (9AM-5PM), afternoon/evening (12PM-8PM), and Saturday shifts. Schedule changes may be required according to library needs.
Status:
This is a temporary 14 week term position from June 2 2026 to August 22 2026.
This position is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS)

Hourly Wage: $17.00/hour

Position Summary:
Cape Breton Regional Library’s 11 branches serve our communities by offering innovative programs and technology access in addition to various lending services (e.g. books, DVDs, recreational equipment, radon detectors, digital resources, and more). Library branches are community spaces and stopping places for many residents and visitors. We serve a diverse population of all ages and recognize the unique needs of all individuals.
Essential Job Responsibilities/Duties:
Under the immediate supervision of Glace Bay Library’s management, the student assistant will work as part of the circulation team and assist with the following core tasks:
- Customer service and circulation duties, including checking out library materials, registering patrons for library cards, answering questions and assisting patrons with searching for and locating library materials, answering incoming phone calls.
- Shelving duties, including sorting and returning library materials to their proper places on the shelves.
- Helping to maintain a tidy and orderly book collection through straightening, shelf reading, and shifting library materials.
- Emptying the book drop and preparing returned items for check-in.
- Discarding and recycling library materials that have been damaged or withdrawn from the collection.
- Assisting with library program preparation.
- Other duties as required (may be required to learn and carry out specific tasks conducted by other library staff members as needed).
Work Conditions:
- A combination of lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and carrying library materials.
Requirements:
- Per employment grant requirements, candidates must be between 15 and 30 years old.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
- Able to work as part of a team as well as independently.
- Technology and computer skills with a proficiency in a Windows-based environment.
- Ability to work in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
- Punctuality, reliability, and attendance are essential to this position.
