Full-time Library Assistant – Children’s Programs (Sydney)

Cape Breton Regional Library invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the full-time Library Assistant – Children’s programs position at James McConnell Memorial Library, Sydney.

Salary: $38,329 – $42,133 annually. 

The James McConnell Library is the largest branch of the Cape Breton Regional Library, serving upwards of 400 people a day. The library is a community hub offering innovative programs and technology access, various lending services (e.g. recreational equipment, radon detectors, eBooks, books, DVDs and more), and a regular stopping place for many residents, including children and teens. We serve a diverse population of all ages and recognize the unique needs of all individuals. 

Key Responsibilities:

Library events and outreach are key components of this position, so the applicant must have the skill and desire to plan and run programs onsite and in the community.

  • Works collaboratively as part of a team to plan and deliver creative, engaging, and educational programs for babies, school-aged children, teens, and families, including early literacy initiatives, after-school programs, March Break, and Saturday activities.
  • Group visits and community outreach.
  • Serves members of the public seeking information. Providing information in-person, by telephone and through digital services.
  • Provides excellent customer service to members of the public at the circulation desk using the Library’s ILS system, including, but not limited to: processing new card applications, receiving new materials, placing holds, and searching the catalogue for requested material.
  • Supports patrons, in-library and remotely, in accessing and using the Library’s digital collections and website.
  • Shelve and move library materials while maintaining proper order
  • Assist patrons with printing, scanning, photocopying, etc. 
  • Assists with training new library staff who will be working at other branch sites.

Hours of work:

35 hrs/ week, including 1 or 2 evenings, includes Saturdays on a 2-month rotational basis.

Working Environment:

Working conditions include a combination of lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and carrying books and other library materials. 

Skills and Competencies Required:

  • Passionate about the joys of reading, learning, discovering, and creating 
  • Enthusiastic and confident in reading stories and leading songs/rhymes aloud in group settings with children and caregivers 
  • Reports honestly and reliably, exercising sound judgement in bringing issues to the attention of a supervisor.
  • Maintains a professional attitude in interactions with the public, staff, and administration.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge and skills required, including web browsing, Microsoft Office applications, etc.
  • Brings an understanding to the work that regardless of people’s differences (sexual orientation, gender expression, cultural background, race, disability, etc.), they are all entitled to equal treatment and equal service.
  • Organizes workload efficiently with attention to detail.
  • Willingness and adaptability to function well in a changing work environment.
  • A valid provincial driver’s licence is an asset

Education:

A university degree or college diploma is required. A combination of post-secondary education and relevant work experience will also be considered.
