CBRL Student Assistant Position

Location: James McConnell Memorial Library, 50 Falmouth Street, Sydney NS B1P 6X9

Hours of Work: Up to 10.5  hours per week. Includes afternoon/evening and weekend shifts. Schedule changes may be required according to library needs.

Status: This is a temporary term position from February 2026 to June of 2026.

Hourly Wage: $16.50

Schedule:   Tuesday 4:30-8:00pm, Saturday 9:00-5:00pm

Position Summary:  

Cape Breton Regional Library’s 11 branches work to support our communities by offering innovative programs and technology access in addition to various lending services (e.g. Borrow-by-Mail service, books, DVDs, recreational equipment, radon detectors, digital resources, and more). Library branches are community spaces and stopping places for many residents and visitors. We serve a diverse population of all ages and recognize the unique needs of all individuals. 

Essential Job Responsibilities/Duties:

Under the immediate supervision of McConnell Library’s management, the student assistant will work as part of the circulation team and assist with the following core tasks:

  • Shelving duties, including sorting and returning library materials to their proper places on the shelves.
  • Helping to maintain a tidy and orderly book collection through straightening and shelf reading.
  • Emptying the book drop and preparing returned items for check-in.
  • Performing alphanumeric sorting and filing tasks.
  • Discarding and recycling library materials that have been damaged or withdrawn from the collection.
  • Assisting with library program preparation.
  • Other duties as required. (May be required to learn and carry out specific tasks conducted by other library staff members as needed).

Work Conditions:

A combination of lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and carrying library materials. 

Requirements:

  • Candidates must be attending high-school on a full-time basis for the academic year (until June 2026).
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Able to work as part of a team as well as independently. 
  • Punctuality, reliability, and attendance are essential to this position.
