A note to Summer Readers: Summer is a season made for reading.
Each year from June to August, CBRL hosts a Summer Reading Challenge for children of all ages and even teens and adults too!
The Summer Reading Challenge is a free, flexible, and fun program designed to keep children of all ages reading and learning all summer long.
Whether they love graphic novels, audiobooks, picture books, or chapter books, our program lets kids choose their own reading adventures with zero pressure and 100% fun.
Why Join? The Purpose of Summer Reading
When school lets out, reading skills can take a vacation too. This phenomenon—often called the “summer slide”—can cause children to lose up to two months of the hard-earned reading skills they gained during the school year.
Our Summer Reading Challenge is built to bridge that gap.
The Benefits for Your Family
- Prevent Skill Loss: Regular reading over the summer break helps children maintain—and even improve—their literacy levels.
- Complete Reading Freedom: There are no mandatory book lists. Kids read what they love, how they want, and at their own pace.
- Earn Fun Rewards: Participants track their reading time to earn ballots towards grand prizes, and get small treasure box trinkets for each milestone.
- Beyond Books: In addition to tracking time reading books, kids can log their minutes spent listening to audiobooks, or reading magazines. There are also bonus prize ballots for completing other summer activities such as going for nature walks or attending a library event.
