Library programs are integral to the Cape Breton Regional Library (CBRL) and its mission “to strengthen and inspire our community by providing quality collections, cultural resources, programs and services in a welcoming environment where all can enjoy reading and learning.”
Purpose
This policy outlines the guidelines used to develop and deliver Library and Library-partnered programs. It does not apply to events that outside individuals and groups may offer in Library spaces. Community members who use library spaces must follow the terms of use set out in the Meeting Room Policy.
Program Development
Library programs contribute to the Library’s mission by complementing the collection, providing opportunities for life-long learning, and satisfying community needs and interests. The principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility guide all program development. Library programs are developed in keeping with the Library Accessibility Plan to encourage full participation by community members of all abilities whenever possible.
Library programs aim to:
- Respond to current topics of interest;
- Promote information gathering, education, and discussion;
- Encourage cultural awareness and diversity;
- Develop physical, information, and digital literacy;
- Foster a love of reading and life-long learning;
- Connect people to services in the community; and
- Provide a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
Program Guidelines
Library and Library-partnered programs must be open to the public and free of charge.
A Library representative will be present at all Library-partnered programs.
The Library upholds the principle of intellectual freedom by supporting the rights of individuals to read, speak, view, and exchange differing points of view on any subject.
Program presenters and participants must follow the Code of Conduct and all other Library policies.
Programs should be presented by library staff or community members with expertise on the program topic.
Program attendance may be limited based on the availability of physical space or to maintain the success of the program. The Library may also set age guidelines for participation. Such limitations will be indicated in all advertising.
Participation will be based on a first-come, first-served basis, either with advanced registration or at the door. The Library may be unable to accommodate groups at registered or drop-in programs. Groups are requested to contact the Library in advance.
The Library reserves the right to cancel both Library and Library-partnered programs as necessary, and will make every effort to notify the public.
Library-Partnered Programs
Individuals and/or organizations who would like to partner with the Library to offer programs may contact either their local branch or the CBRL Program Office for more information.
Program Suggestions
The Cape Breton Regional Library welcomes program suggestions from community members and staff. Suggestions may be made through the Program Proposal Form on the CBRL website. Library staff evaluate all suggestions against CBRL’s program development aims, mission statement, and resources. Not all suggestions will result in programs.
Group Tours / Class Visits
The Library welcomes visits from groups of all ages wishing to learn about services and programs. Groups are required to book in advance.
Groups and classes who wish to make an unofficial visit are welcome to use the Library at anytime. Library staff will not be available to lead tours for unscheduled visits.
Children’s groups and classes must be accompanied by a teacher or group leader, who is responsible for the conduct of the participants while visiting the Library.
