We are excited to kick off a fun reading challenge for all ages celebrating Canadian authors from across the country.

Readers are invited to explore books from five Canadian regions, and you can find great suggestions on the online catalog including:

– English and French titles

– Separate reading lists for youth and adults

How to take part

1. Get a free contest map at your library or print one from the Same Page website.
2. Read one Canadian book from each of the five regions.
3. Bring your map to the library after you finish each book. You’ll get a travel stamp (sticker) and a chance to win a prize.

Books To Read in the Dark: Teen Horror

The Hallowe’en season isn’t only about costumes and candy! We’re highlighting spooks and scares with this curated list of 40 Horror novels for teens (recommended for ages 13+). Murder, mystery, spirits and monsters await anyone brave enough to brandish a flashlight and crack the spines of these insidious stories.

Gothic Horror 2024

Our Librarians have compiled two lists of recommended reads in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The first is a non fiction list featuring true stories of residential school survivors and new perspectives on indigenous and colonial relations in Canada. The second list features works of fiction by Canadian Indigenous authors.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Reading List

September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It’s a day for remembering and honouring the survivors and the children lost to residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Recognition of the ongoing impacts of this tragic history is vital to the reconciliation process. Today is a great day to educate ourselves in the interest of continued growth, so we’ve put together 30 books that reflect on residential schools through first hand accounts, explain important methods for moving forward in harmony, and share Indigenous stories from across Canada and in our communities.

Kanopy Getting Started

CBRL has partnered with Victoria County Home Support Services to create age-friendly reading kits to introduce readers to new ways to keeping reading books. This product was funded through Nova Scotia’s Age-Friendly Communities Grant.

Some people find that reading full length regular print books is too challenging as they age. Perhaps the print is too small or the story is too complex to follow. Physical or mental impairments can make it hard to enjoy what once might have been a beloved past time.

In each of our Your Way to Keep Reading Bags you will find:

• Audiobooks with Headphones. Each bag contains a Playaway Audiobook and over the ear headphones. Playaways are small handheld devices that operate with batteries. Each Playaway contains a professional recording of a book, so the reader can use their ears rather than their eyes to read.
• A variety of Large Print Books and Quick Reads books.
  • Large Print books are great for readers who want to keep reading their favourite authors and genres but need larger text sizes to read with ease.
  • Quick Reads books are short novels and short stories, many of them also have large text sizes. These books are great for people who struggle to read and enjoy longer novels.
