About Learn to Crochet: Kit # 2 Ribbed Hat and Pom Poms
Recommended age: 8 and up.
In this beginner friendly kit you will learn the half double crochet stitch and use it to make a hat. You will finish the hat by making a pom pom. Printed instructions and video links are provided.
Your projects are yours to keep.

Items Included in the kit:
- 100g (approx 150 m) of worsted weight yarn
- 25 g yarn for Pom Pom
- Crochet Hook – 5 mm
- Darning Needle
You will need:
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Scissors
- An Internet connected device such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone to view the video tutorials. Written instructions are also included.

Half Double Crochet instructions
- Yarn over
- Insert the hook in the specified stitch
- Yarn over
- Pull up a loop. You’ll have three loops on your hook
- Yarn over again
- Pull through all three loops on the hook

Project 1 Ribbed Hat

Ribbed Hat Instructions:
Supplies needed:
- 1 Skein – Any worsted weight or bulky yarn (150 metres or more)
- 1 Crochet Hook – 5 mm (6 mm if using a bulky yarn)
- Darning Needle
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape
Abbreviations:
- Ch = Chain
- Hdc = Half Double Crochet
- St = Stitch
- Ss = Slip Stitch
Instructions:
- Chain 12”-14” or 30-36 cm (or longer for a slouchy hat)
- Row 1 – Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, Hdc in each ch across. – Ch 1 and turn
- Row 2 – Working in back loops only, Hdc in first st, and in each st all the way across. Ch 1, turn. (Be very careful not to miss the last stitch, and that you have the same amount in every row).
- Repeat Row 2 until you have reached approximately 17”-20” or 44-50 cm (Or until it fits around your head).
- Stop at an EVEN amount of rows.
- Fold in half to join the final row to the first row. Stitch these rows together with a slip stitch.
- Leave about 20” or 50 cm of yarn tail.
- Cut yarn and pull through.
- With Darning Needle, weave in and out to gather top of hat.
- Pull snug and tie to the beginning yarn.
- Leave this tail of yarn to tie Pom Pom to.

Finishing
Tie your finished Pom Pom to the top of your hat and weave in any loose ends with the darning needle.
